wedding day tips from a dorset wedding photographer

wedding day tips from a wedding photographer

Ultimately, the most important thing is that you do exactly what you want to do on your wedding day. You don’t have to follow ancient traditions, you don’t have to spend loads of money on things that don’t feel important to you and you certainly don’t need to worry about what anyone else thinks. But here is a few hints and tips from a wedding photographer in Dorset to help you get the very best out of your day and your photos.

  • In the morning set aside your dress, shoes, perfume, bouquet, invites and any other accessories ready for your photographer to take those gorgeous detail shots.

  • Try and keep things as tidy as possible or allocate a corner of the room to keep clear for photos. No one wants a beautiful photo with a carrier bag lurking in the corner.

  • Get some cute photos with your bridesmaids before you get into your dress if you have the time.

  • Think about who you would like to get you into your dress. This is such a special moment, and is lovely to have captured so you can look back on it forever.

  • Do a first look with bridesmaids, parents or partner. Even I struggle not to shed a tear during this emotional moment.

  • Be present. This sounds like an obvious one, but really do just take a moment to look around you and take everything in. It goes so fast.

  • Try not to do too many things just ‘for a photo.’ Do things because they are fun, or add to your wedding day, not just for instagram.

  • There are lots of fun alternatives to some of the traditions, for example doing a wedding cake piñata instead of cutting a cake. You don’t have to do anything in place of the things you choose not to include, but there are plenty of fun ideas.

  • Keep your formal group photos to a minimum. I always recommend having no more than10-15. They can take up a large chunk of your day and be quite stressful/boring for the bride and groom if they go on too long. You could be mingling and eating canapés instead. I also recommend having one or two members of the wedding party to help gather the right people for the next photo.

A champagne spray with your wedding party is always a good idea. It is so much fun and gets everyone hyped up ready for the evening. I also love to take the bridesmaids and groomsmen for more relaxed, fun photos in the evening just before the couple photos if there is time.
